Every child deserves a therapist who isn't buried in paperwork

Special education therapists spend up to 40% of their workweek on documentation. That's time taken away from the students who need them most. IEPioneer exists to change that.

The documentation crisis in special education

School-based therapists — SLPs, OTs, PTs, and BCBAs — are required to maintain detailed session notes, track goal progress, prepare IEP updates, and generate billing records for every student, every session.

Most do this manually. Notes are typed after hours. Progress data is scattered across spreadsheets. IEP annual reviews require days of pulling records together. The result is burnout, turnover, and less time for the students who depend on these services.

Meanwhile, school districts face growing caseloads, therapist shortages, and increasing compliance requirements. Something has to give.

Our approach: AI that understands clinical context

IEPioneer isn't a generic transcription tool. Our AI is built specifically for special education, with an understanding of IEP goal structures, therapeutic terminology, and the nuances of progress measurement across disciplines.

When a speech therapist records a session, IEPioneer already knows the student's goals, baseline performance, and target criteria. The AI produces a draft note that reflects clinical reality — not just a word-for-word transcript.

Progress data is extracted automatically and mapped to specific IEP goals, giving therapists and administrators a clear picture of student outcomes without manual data entry.

Students in a classroom

Our story

Our story began in the classroom. For over a decade, Kelly worked as a speech-language pathologist and special ed administrator. Mike watched in awe as Kelly and her colleagues navigated a pandemic and staffing shortages, all while continuing to serve their students with a smile. Their effort and care was unmatched — especially by the antiquated systems they had to use as part of their jobs.

Mike spent those same years working in law and technology, helping large organizations adopt new technology safely and responsibly. Night after night, the two of us compared our days: Kelly's spent working around outdated tools, Mike's spent with the very technology that could replace them. Finally, enough was enough. We knew someone needed to fix this, and we knew we could do it. Kelly understood exactly what special educators needed. Mike could build it the right way.

That's why IEPioneer exists. Special education is one of the most important corners of our society — where dedicated professionals show up every day for students and families who need and deserve their best. Our goal is to put our experience to work for them: to give special educators tools worthy of the work they do, and to make a positive impact on the students and families at the heart of it all.
